A 51-year-old woman pumping gas into her vehicle had to be rushed to a hospital on Monday after her car abruptly rolled forward severing her thumb.

The woman from Bangor, Maine underwent emergency surgery after a resulting bump during the vehicle’s move caused her open car door to slam shut on her finger, according to police.

Brewer Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt said the woman was parked at Brewer's Big Apple convenience store when she first harmlessly jumped into her driver's side seat, moments before it began moving forward.

With the driver's side door open it hit a bumper on the gas pump island, slamming it shut on her thumb and agonizingly slicing it off.

He said the woman and her thumb were rushed to the hospital, where she underwent surgery to re-attach it.

By Tuesday there was no word by police on if the attempt had been successful.

Officials said about 10 gallons of gas were spilled, but that the Brewer fire crews quickly cleaned it up.

Police were not releasing the woman's name.

The report comes just days after a Texas man's leg was severed below the knee also by his own vehicle that was mutually parked outside a gas station.

The 57-year-old became pinned to a parking barrier in San Angelo after his truck rolled forward, twisting his leg entirely around according to a witnessing assistant manager at the Shell gas station.

Speaking to Go San Angelo, that witness, Rosanna Rodriguez, said: 'When he was up against the truck, I could tell it was broken. When we pushed the truck off it was turned the opposite way.'
